5 Unbelievable Test Taking Stories (Warning: Disgusting)

The other day I mentioned that Marissa, our ACT/SAT instructor, had some crazy stories about clients taking standardized tests.

I didn’t have room to tell you about them, but I wasn’t trying to tease you either.  So, for your amusement, here’s a list of the five craziest test taking stories I’ve heard, either via Marissa or elsewhere.

  1. Great Neck NY kid busted for taking the ACT for other students, three years ago.  He’s Caucasian, he took the test for an Asian-American student with a traditional Chinese last name.  (Funny on two levels.)

This guy had a nice business, apparently he’d fly home from UMich a few times a year and take tests for his clients at $3,000-4,000 a pop.

Proctoring rules have changed – now they require photo IDs.

  1. Several testing centers losing exams turned in by students.  Roslyn High School lost about 51 ACT tests two years ago. Sadly, this happened in the Fall, and several tests were “Hail Mary” last ditch attempts by Seniors to boost their scores right before Nov 1 Early Decision deadlines.

  1. Proctor sitting at desk during the test, watching YouTube videos.  No headphones.

  1. Marching band practicing outside the testing classroom.

  1.  Neighboring test taker vomiting mid-test.  10-15 minutes of awkward inaction by the proctor, who must have been thinking, “Not my job description.”

Here’s a serious point – no matter how prepared you are, there’s always the possibility that an unforeseen, “Black Swan” moment will occur.

So kids need to go into each ACT or other test prepared as much as humanly possible for ANYTHING.  Prepare for the unpreparable.

There is no such thing as “perfect” testing conditions.  Take your test prep seriously, including doing your homework, timed, to simulate game day conditions.

Understand EXACTLY how many sections you’re taking, how long you have for each section, when your breaks are, how long they last, etc. etc. etc.

The more you obsess over these seemingly small details, the more under control and relaxed you’ll feel, and the better you’ll do.

We’re down to (3) spots left for our newest ACT Crusher class, which starts this Sunday.  It’s perfect for kids taking the April ACT.

Slots are first-come, first served.

Use the coupon code “Crush100” for an instant $100 scholarship.

(If that link doesn’t work, that means that we sold out.  We’re keeping enrollment very, very small so that students get personalized, tutor-quality attention, but at class rates)

All details are posted on that page, but if you have any questions about the schedule, content, anything – you can contact Marissa directly (her info is on that page too).

Alrighty, that’s all I got for you today!

P.S.  I didn’t exactly get her permission to say this, but Marissa is still taking on a few private clients (in addition to teaching classes), both local and non-local via Skype.  She has clients from all over the country and world, it’s amazing to me.

You can learn about her tutoring on the same site as her classes:  www.LockwoodTestPrep.com
